Flare Systems Automatic Ignition Unit

LLC "EMC TRIADA" has supplied an automatic ignition unit for the flare facility of one of the gas processing and gas industry departments of Ukraine. The solution was implemented within the framework of a real production project, and the equipment of the unit below corresponds to the actually supplied equipment.
The automatic ignition unit is an engineering-completed module designed for guaranteed ignition of flare burners in start-up and emergency gas release modes without operator participation. The solution provides a controlled, reproducible and safe ignition process with constant monitoring of technological parameters and safety states.
The system is based on Smitsvonk high-voltage ignition equipment, integrated with PLC, which synchronizes the operation of shut-off valves, pressure sensors, flame control and interlocks within a single control algorithm.
This project uses a full set of Smitsvonk pilot equipment, which operates directly in the flare zone and provides guaranteed ignition in difficult industrial conditions:
- 5000 mm long Pilot burner for natural gas (pressure 0.5–1 bar);
- Flame control using a type K thermocouple;
- Made of heat-resistant stainless steel 310S and 316SST;
- 15 m High-temperature ignition cable in a stainless steel protective sleeve;
- 15 m High-temperature thermocouple cable in a stainless steel protective sleeve.
In fact, this unit is the “heart” of the ignition system, which operates directly in the zone of high temperatures and aggressive environments.

The provided photos were taken at the stage of acceptance and internal technical reporting before shipment to the customer. Part of the equipment is recorded in a semi-packed state - this is a standard practice for controlling completeness, preserving factory markings and warranty integrity of products during logistics.
This recording format allows you to confirm:
- the compliance of the actually delivered composition with the specification;
- the originality of the manufacturer's components;
- compliance with internal technical control procedures.
Functional Purpose
The unit is used as part of a flare system for:
- automatic ignition of burners during start-up or emergency gas combustion;
- confirmation of the presence of a flame before gas supply;
- control of pressure and readiness of the system for ignition;
- shutdown of gas supply in case of any emergency or uncertain conditions.

Equipment and Component Base (actually delivered composition)
The unit uses industrial components from leading manufacturers:
WIKA (pressure gauges), co-ax valves (valve), Genebre (fittings), BULK and PANAM Engineers (manifolds and fittings), Warom explosion-proof equipment. All elements are mounted in a single functional module on a frame with a control cabinet and switching.
Simplified operating logic
- The PLC generates a “Start” signal → high-voltage ignition is activated.
- The system checks the “Ready” status → confirmation of readiness.
- If there is a “Fault”, the gas supply is blocked.
- The gas valve opens only after confirmation of stable ignition.
